The TEAM Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit and Nonprofit Public Health Organization (NPHO) dedicated to training future physician-surgical specialists and expanding access to quality healthcare across South Texas, bringing essential care to underserved communities.
Who We Are
The TEAM Foundation strengthens healthcare across South Texas by developing physician surgical residency and fellowship programs while expanding access to specialty care in underserved communities.
Through partnerships with physicians, hospitals, medical schools, and community organizations, TEAM creates opportunities for future medical and surgical specialists to train, serve, and build lasting connections with the communities that need them most. TEAM also expands access to care by providing clinical services that bring high-quality specialty care closer to the patients and communities we serve.

What We’ve Accomplished
TEAM has already reached our first major milestone in building the future of specialty care in South Texas. Phase I of Sight for South Texas achieved its fundraising goal, making it possible to launch the Ophthalmology Residency Program, recruit world-class faculty, secure ACGME submission, and advance development of the Mein Eye Institute at Brooks City Base.
TEAM recently hosted a summer social that brought together our Bexar County medical community for a night of connection, family fun, and fireworks!
Advanced Oculoplastic & Reconstructive Services
With the addition of Dr. Armin Avdic, patients now have access to specialized eyelid, facial, and reconstructive procedures, further strengthening the program's comprehensive ophthalmic care offerings.
A State-of-the-Art Training Environment
The TEAM Ophthalmology Residency Program is headquartered in San Antonio's Brooks City Base, providing residents with access to advanced technology, modern clinical facilities, and hands-on training opportunities.
TEAM Lunch at The Dominion Country Club
The TEAM Foundation recently brought together physicians and community leaders for a lunch meeting at The Dominion Country Club to connect, share updates, and strengthen relationships across the organization.
Specialty Retinal Services Offered by Dr.Mein. Dr. Calvin Mein is expanding the program's retinal care offerings June/July 2026, providing specialized treatment for complex retinal conditions while enhancing clinical training opportunities for the next generation of ophthalmologists.
Expanded Specialty Eye Care Services
Sponsel Eye Experts has expanded its service offerings to include oculoplastic surgery, retinal care, orbital reconstruction, thyroid eye disease treatment, cosmetic procedures, tear duct surgery, and a new full-service optical center.
